Recognizing its significance, Fatima was officially granted city status on July 12, 1997. Located in the centre of Portugal, Fatima’s Sanctuary is the 4th biggest catholic place of pilgrimage in the world. Until 1917, Fatima was an unknown village, focused on pastoralism and the agriculture. It became known worldwide for the Marian apparitions to the three little shepherds that took place there between 13 May and 13 October 1917. The Sanctuary of Fatima brought development, being elevated to the city on July 12, 1997. The Sanctuary has an environment of serenity and light, inviting prayer, reflection and harmony of mind. Regardless of religious belief, no one is indifferent to the universe of tranquility and faith that finds there.
Our morning drive takes us from Swiss lakes to Swiss Army. At the once-secret Swiss army bunker at Fortress Fürigen, we’ll see part of the massive defense system designed to keep Switzerland strong and neutral. Afterward, a short drive into the countryside brings us to the charming Alpine village of Engelberg, our picturesque home for the next two days. We’ll settle into our lodge then head out for an orientation walk. Our stroll through the village will end at the Engelberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery with its own cheese-making operation. You’ll have free time to wander back before dinner together. Sleep in Engelberg (2 nights). Bus: 1 hr. Walking: light.

Located in Central Portugal, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima has become, throughout the years, the fourth biggest catholic pilgrimage site in the world, due to the appartitions of Virgin Mary to Three Little shepherds in 1917.
The Chapel of apparitions is built on the site of a Marian apparition that appeared before three peasant children in 1917. Every year since then on the anniversaries of the apparitions, May 13 and Oct. 13, the streets of Fatima swell with throngs of pilgrims who make their way to the holy site. Fatima is home to dozens of imposing churches and monuments. Shops selling religious souvenirs, hostels and hotels can be found throughout the city.
